Attempt to beat world record fails, funds raised

It was wet, wild and for a good cause.
And although it wasn't a new record, participants thought Lambda Chi Alpha's attempt at the world's largest water balloon fight was still a success.
"It is a great day," said Whitney Harrington, freshman applied communications major. "Why not come out and have fun?"
This was Lambda Chi Alpha's second attempt at a world record. Last year, the fraternity successfully set the record for the most heads shaved in one day.
"This year we were working toward a new record," said John Pana, standards chair of Lambda Chi Alpha, "but our focus is still the same."
The members of Lambda Chi Alpha aimed to increase awareness among young adults about the need for cancer research, as well as to raise money for that research. All the proceeds from the event are going to support the Taussig Cancer Center at the Cleveland Clinic.
"Before we began today, we had raised about $1,200," Pana said.
The current world record for the largest water balloon fight is 2,849 people. Lambda Chi Alpha was hoping to draw 3,000 people to throw balloons throughout the course of the day.
Although the fraternity didn't set a new record, Pana was still pleased.
"It was definitely worth it," he said. "For the people out there, it was the most fun we've had in a long time."
